Who Wants to Be a Voice Talent?

April 16, 2016 by Jodi Krangle

Who Wants To Be A Voice Talent? – J. Christopher Dunn is a very talented voice over artist who gets asked what it takes to be a voice talent on a regular basis (I think any of us that have been in the business a bit have been asked the same). Here’s a pretty detailed analysis of what you need to know if you want to pursue this area of self-employment. Yes, it’s a very rewarding line of work (I LOVE it – and I know I’m not alone!) – but it’s not for the faint of heart. The advice in this article will be hugely helpful to you if you really are determined to make a go of it.

And along the same lines, Paul Strikwerda talks about some of the things you should definitely think about in his article, How to Break into the Voice-Over Business.  Paul has also recently written something that you really should read before you jump into this business.  If you can get past those words of caution and still have passion for this, then you’re doing really well.

Dee Bradley Baker also has a fantastic website called I Want To Be A Voice Actor – and it has *everything* on there.  There’s information on demos, agents, VO myths, learning to act, how to get started with your home studio, etc.  Well worth a look.

Internet Voice Coaching

April 15, 2016 by Jodi Krangle

Internet Voice Coach is a new service for voice actors that gives tips and advice about various aspects of the industry. They also provide podcasts, personal feedback, downloads of helpful stuff for your business and your practice, they can work with you on auditions, there’s a forum, and a lot more. Whether you’re just starting out or have been doing this a number of years already, there’s something for you on this site. It’s well worth checking out!

And speaking of Voice Over coaches, you should check out “Uncle” Roy Yokelson’s page about just that.  If you’re looking for a coach, he might just be the solution you need.  And he produces demos too!  A pretty awesome combination.

If you’re really serious about becoming a voice talent, you really really need to treat this as a business – not a hobby.  Freshbooks can help you do that by presenting your invoices to your clients in a professional manner and allowing you to track outstanding invoices, keep track of expenses and a whole lot more.  Personally, I LOVE Freshbooks, and highly recommend it as an excellent tool for your business.  Check it out!

Instant Background Music

April 15, 2016 by Jodi Krangle

Putting together a demo and need background music? Producing a film, podcast, school project, commercial, corporate video or anything like that? Instant Background Music is a great place to try. This could be the cheapest way to get some really great music. They sell a package of 97 songs for only $97 dollars! That’s a pretty sweet deal. I know from experience that background music for projects can get really expensive. And these are professionally produced, broadcast quality instrumental tracks in a whole bunch of different genres.

You can listen to a demo of their stuff here
(that’s my voice interspersed in the music there 🙂 ).

VO Studio Tech

April 15, 2016 by Jodi Krangle

George Whittam is a genius when it comes to fixing recording issues for voice talent.  If you’re just getting into voice overs and you don’t know what equipment to buy, he’s the guy to ask. He has several options available from a super simple beginner’s set up, to a pro’s dream. And if you already have equipment you’re not sure how to use, he offers technical assistance at very reasonable rates. Well worth checking out!

And Rob Mayzes, a professional audio engineer and teacher from London, has a fantastic resource for those of us who got into this without realizing we’d need to be audio engineers as well. 😉 (You know who you are.)  He explains the details of how to record your voice over projects in clear and easy to understand terms.
